Runners wrap up Games with three more medals

By Chris Kaftan Media Director SOFIA, Bulgaria - The U.S. Athletics Team wrapped up its fifth and final day of competition Saturday in much the same way it did previous days, by boosting the U.S.’s medal count. American relay teams added three medals to the pile: a gold in the men’s 4x100m relay, a silver in the women’s 4x100m relay, and a bronze in the men’s 4x400m relay. In the men’s 4x100m relay, Americans Kyle Winter, DeWayne Esper, Taylor Koss and Joshua Hembrough edged Ukraine by 0.22 of a second, racing to the gold in 41.59. On the women’s side, the 4x100m relay team of MaKenzie Hageman, Janna Vander Meulen, Saria Webb and Shanieka Coleman came in second in 47.70. Their time broke the deaf world record by three hundreths of a second, but Belarus ran faster than the U.S. to peg the new world record at 47.37. The Americans, however, still go home with a record; their time of 47.70 seconds is a new U.S. mark. In the men’s 4x400m relay, DeWayne Esper, Taylor Koss, Immanuel Neubauer and Delvin Furlough nabbed bronze with a time of 3:18.68. In the women’s 4x400m relay, the U.S. - MaKenzie Hageman, Kori Koss, Saria Webb and Janna Vander Meulen - came in fifth with a time of 4:07.71. In the throws, Jasmine Simmons placed fifth in women’s discus throw with 42.25 meters.
