Soccer wins second straight

SOFIA, Bulgaria - With its 2-0 win against Poland, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team is one of three remaining undefeated teams. Japan and Russia also have zeroes in their loss columns.

Despite very physical play by Poland, the Americans controlled the ball from the beginning, and goalie Meghan Maiwald put up a brick wall, blocking all of Poland’s shots on goal.

Felicia Schroeder scored in the first half with an assist from Madison Taylor, and the U.S. went into halftime, 1-0.

In the second half, several close shots by the U.S. resulted in a Heather Kennedy score, assisted by Liza Offreda.

The physical play resulted in several collisions, including one in the first half between Laura Yon Carlson and a Polish offender that forced a momentary pause in play so they could recover. Barbara Previ also went down with an injury in the second half but continued to play.

The U.S. next plays Japan at 9:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m. Eastern Time) Tuesday at Pravets Sports Complex.
