Team USA at the Nordic Baltic Championships

USA Deaf Masters Orienteering participated in the Nordic Baltic Deaf Orienteering & Open Championships in Perstorp, Sweden on September 14 - 16, 2018. Tom Wells and Mark Mace represented the United States in the field of 100 competitors.  The Sprint event took place in an urban area which made it tricky to find the orienteering controls around buildings, fences and prohibited areas. Both the Middle & Long Distance events ran through a forest and rural area farms.  The terrain was very challenging with lots of big knolls, depressions, downed trees, swamps, historical stone walls, and thick soft mosses. The nature was truly beautiful to enjoy racing in. The weather was cool during the Sprint races, while the Middle Distance suffered chilly rains, the sun came out for the Long Distance event.   Tom Wells completed all 3 races with the event's best competitors in the M40 (gender/age group), which proved too difficult to capture the top 3 places for medals.  Mark Mace nabbed 3 gold medals in the M60 Sprint, Middle Distance & Long Distance events. Overall, the event was very successful for USA, and we hope to bring more competitors to the next Nordic Baltic Deaf Orienteering & Open Championships. USA thanks the hosts for their efforts in creating an efficient and enjoyable event for all.  [caption id="attachment_9559" align="alignnone" width="2048"]IMG-0146 L to R: Tom Wells, Coach Patti Mace, and Mark Mace represented the USA[/caption] [caption id="attachment_9560" align="alignnone" width="1536"]IMG-0149 Tom Wells and Mark Mace prepping for their races.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_9561" align="alignnone" width="1944"]IMG-0151 Tom Wells races to the course marker.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_9562" align="alignnone" width="960"]IMG-0236 Mark Mace sprints to the finish line.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_9563" align="alignnone" width="2848"]IMG-2043 Mark Mace with one of his 3 gold medals.[/caption]
