U.S. Women’s Team Continues to Tour Local Tournaments

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 4, 2011) – The local players of the US Deaf Women’s team competed in the Milkshake Super Volleyball Bowl in Sterling, VA this past Saturday to surface as a stronger team. The US started the tournament with a solid 2-0 win over Crazy Aces[A] (25-13, 25-12).  Their next match versus Smackdown [A] was hard fought loss, dropping both games (22-25, 24-26).  The third match versus Boosh [A], who in the past have competed as a AA team, preyed on the US team’s weakness in defense as they dropped the next two games (20-25, 13-25).  The team split their final match against Hitsquad [A]. This match tested the US team’s mental strength as the ladies were down over 7 points in both matches and battled back to level score, ultimately winning their last game (23-25, 25-22).  Their final record was 3-5. Not only did the Women’s team face tough competition throughout the tournament, they also played while missing few elements of their team: their head coach and their team captain. Both Coach Lynn Ray Boren and Captain Kristina Burke fell ill the morning of the tournament and were unable to join the team.  Veteran Middle Hitter, Katelyn Reese felt that it resulted in a good team bonding experience, noting that “we worked together on and off the court, helping to give each other advice to improve our game if we get off track.” Reese adds that the team was really able to identify what we needed to work on in order to improve to a winning record. The US Women’s Team will continue their tour on February 12 in at the Community College of Baltimore County in Essex, MD.  Real-time team updates are available on Twitter: @USA_DeafVB Written by Emma Racila
