USADSF to Endorse Brighton Declaration

In collaboration with the office of the Honorable Jim Langevin (D-RI), co-chair of the Olympic and Paralympic Caucus, the USA Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF) will endorse the Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport, an international document that seeks equality for women in all levels of sport. A celebratory signing event is slated for Monday, Jan. 28, 9:30-11 a.m. at the Congressional Meeting Room North of the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C.  “By endorsing the Brighton Declaration, USADSF affirms its commitment to providing equal opportunities for deaf girls and women in all areas of deaf sport in America,” USADSF president Jack Lamberton said. The Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport was created in 1994 at the first conference of the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG).  The IWG’s vision and the Brighton Declaration’s overriding aim is to develop a sporting culture that enables and values full involvement of women in every aspect of sport. Featured speakers include:  Jack C. Lamberton, president of USADSF; Dr. Donalda Ammons, former president of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf; Shirley H. Platt, commissioner of USA Deaf Basketball; Dr. Caroline Solomon,  two-time Deaflympian; Dr. Carole Oglesby, representative from the International Working Group on Women and Sport; and youth speakers Crystal  Salit and Hanna Johnston-Shaw. “The Declaration principles serve as a departure point for signatories to become active in the advancement of sport in terms of gender equality,” IWG co-chair Raija Mattila said. So far, 332 organizations have signed the Brighton Declaration, including the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, SportAccord, and 56 national Olympic Committees.
