Caxias do Sul 2022

Frequently Asked Questions for 2021 Summer Deaflympics

Summer Deaflympics 2021: Caxias do Sul, Brazil

  • What is USADSF's current status on the Games?

    1. A: We don't have a perfect answer and we have no idea what's ahead of us. In the meantime, we will continue to plan and fundraise. We are monitoring the situation the best we can and we will continue to communicate as transparently as possible with what we know. We may bring a team, or none at all. Only time and circumstances will tell. In the meantime, TeamUSA meets on a bi-weekly basis to plan for Brazil. TeamUSA is closely monitoring the situation.

  • How much will Deaflympics participants have to fundraise?

    1. Fundraising will be very very challenging for the athletes and each NSO. The USADSF office is working on a fundraising timeline and specific deadline dates will be shared by Monday, November 16th.
    2. As of today (11/9/2020), the estimated cost per athlete will be $4,500, maximum. It could be less. The more information we get from the Brazil Organizing Committee (OC), the more accurate information we can provide on the estimated cost per athlete.

  • I must train. I need details about the schedule for the Games.

    1. A: We are aware. The Medical Commission recognizes the challenges that come with this kind of situation. There is no way we can predict what will happen. It is imperative that all teams use the Return to Play Guidelines that was posted to ensure that everyone trains in the safest way possible.

  • My NSO needs to conduct tryouts and select athletes. What do we do now?

    1. A: Athlete and coach selection criteria is due to the USADSF office by December 15th, 2020 for consideration for the 2021 Deaflympics. Submit your latest version of your criteria to your NSO Representatives and a USADSF representative will work with you to finalize the criteria.
    2. The NSO Board will need to decide if they are ready to commit to going to the Deaflympics. We will not force NSOs to bring a team to Brazil, not in these unpredictable times.
    3. Side note: Each NSO and their athletes will need to make honest and serious decisions based on the upcoming timeline on whether it is practical to send a team. Each sport will be different in their decisions. USADSF and the Medical Commission will work with each NSO before any decision is made.

  • Is Brazil making plans? What is their status?

    1. A: Currently the plan for the Summer Deaflympics is still planned for in Caxias do Sul, Brazil in December 2021. We will continue to monitor the situation. For now, please refer to the Games Organizing Committee's official website for more information.
