About Ski & Snowboard

The first national meeting of Deaf skiers was held in 1968, and the US Deaf Skiers Association was formed in 1970. The name was changed in 1998 to include snowboarders, so it is now known as the US Deaf Skiers and Snowboarders Association (USDSSA). The USDSSA offers recreational events for deaf skiers and snowboarders, and coordinates opportunities for serious competitors. The USDSSA is also responsible for the selection of the national ski and snowboard teams.

USA made its first stab at skiing at the 1967 Deaflympics, and came home with two gold medals. And then to add to a respectable winter trophy case, USA’s snowboarders have won nearly 30 medals since the first snowboard event was introduced at the 1999 Winter Deaflympics.
